Reporting the incident to the appropriate parties

Consider which third parties you need to notify as a matter of urgency (for example, some reporting obligations require notification to be made immediately) and which third parties can be notified at a later stage in the process.

You may need to notify:
  • public and/or local authorities and/or other regulatory bodies (e.g. dangerous occurrences/injuries/environmental releases may require formal notification to health and safety and/or environmental regulators within specified time periods; there may also be notification requirements under permits)
  • insurers (see Do insurers need to be notified?)
  • others, such as third parties whose property might have been affected or who might be at risk, eg landlords, tenants and occupiers of properties, or lenders in accordance with covenants in loan documentation
